The history of Anfield
Anfield is a football stadium in Liverpool, England. It has been the home of Liverpool Football Club since their formation in 1892. It was originally built to hold 10,000 spectators, but now holds 54,074.
The history of Anfield goes back to 1884, when land at the site was purchased by Liverpool FC’s founder John Houlding for £450. The club moved there from its previous home at Stanley Park. Construction of the new ground started in 1884 and was completed two years later.
The first ever match at Anfield was played on 28 September 1884, between Everton and Earlestown, which Everton won 3-0.
In 1889, a stand was built on the north side of the ground to accommodate 3,000 spectators. This stand was demolished in 1898 to make way for an enlarged main stand, which could seat up to 7,000 fans.
Further expansion took place in 1906 with the building of a second stand on the north side of the ground. This increased capacity to around 30,000 people.
In 1922, following Liverpool’s promotion to Division One (the top division of English football), another expansion project began which almost doubled capacity again by adding an additional tier to both ends of the ground – increasing it from 30,000 to approximately 60,000 seats
