Claude H. Patterson, 92, of Bedford, Remembers a Life Well-Lived

The legacy of Claude H. Patterson, affectionately known as “Hump,” lives on as family and friends gather to celebrate his remarkable life. The 92-year-old Bedford resident passed away on January 14, 2025, marking the end of a life rich in service, hard work, and love.

Claude Humphrey “Hump” Patterson, a beloved figure in Bedford, passed away at the age of 92 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, leaving behind an enduring legacy cherished by his family and the community. Born on February 20, 1932, in Bedford County, Claude was the son of Jack Edward Patterson, Sr. and Annie McFall Patterson. His life’s journey was marked by commitment, hard work, and a love for the land, which deeply influenced his character.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Claude served valiantly during the Korean War. This experience greatly shaped his resilience and sense of duty. Upon returning home, he began a fulfilling career with Adams Construction Company, quickly rising to the role of superintendent. For 25 years, he contributed his skills and knowledge to the construction industry, forging lasting relationships built on trust and teamwork.

In 1981, after decades of hard work, Claude embarked on a new adventure by founding Patterson Brothers Paving, Inc. His entrepreneurial spirit drove him to serve the local community, installing roads and driveways that would facilitate growth and development in the area.

Claude’s love for farming was profound. Following his retirement, he took pride in managing Otter Creek Angus Farm, where he nurtured a herd of cattle that brought him immense joy. His connection to the land was a source of fulfillment and happiness, reflecting a deep appreciation for nature and its rhythms. As he often said,

“Nothing compares to the simple joys of working the land and watching life grow.”

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Claude was a family man who found joy in moments spent with his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Annie Jean Overstreet Patterson, three sons—Randall G. Patterson (Karen), Ralph E. Patterson (Carol), and Michael C. Patterson (Margaret)—and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought light into his life. His family recalls his stories, wisdom, and unwavering support as the bedrock of their family unit.

Claude was also an avid outdoor enthusiast, finding pleasure in coon hunting with friends and family. This pastime not only provided recreation but also numerous adventures and bonding moments shared with loved ones under the stars. Claude was a dedicated member of the Timber Ridge Baptist Church, where he conveyed his values of community and faith.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Quaker Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or Timber Ridge Baptist Church, ensuring Claude’s memory continues to thrive in service to others.

A funeral service honoring Claude will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Timber Ridge Baptist Church, officiated by Pastor Phil Kelley. Interment will follow at 3 PM at Quaker Baptist Church Cemetery, where family and friends will gather to share their memories of a remarkable man. The community is invited to pay their respects during visitation from 5 PM to 7 PM on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
