Claude D. Groves Jr. was born on July 28, 1944, in Warrenton, Virginia. He fondly recollected his time in Marquette, Michigan, where he created lasting memories. Claude’s early education took place at Stafford High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia. His academic pursuits culminated in a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech, followed by a Master’s degree from Northern Michigan University.

A proud veteran, Claude served honorably in the United States Air Force as a Captain and Electronic Warfare Officer with the 644th Bomber Squadron under the Strategic Air Command. This experience instilled in him a love for his country, a trait that would remain integral throughout his life.

After his military career, Claude transitioned into civilian life, finding success as a computer programmer focusing on banking security. His diligent work and expertise contributed significantly to the financial sector, showcasing the skills he developed during his military service.

Retirement brought Claude newfound joy. His days were enriched by music, family, and the great outdoors. He frequently visited the Chicago Botanic Garden or Morton Arboretum, finding peace among nature’s beauty. He was known for his rigorous exercise routine, demonstrating his commitment to health and vitality.

Claude once expressed, reflecting his passion for music.

Despite his achievements, Claude faced personal losses. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma Nelson Groves and Claude D. Groves Sr., his sister Rebecca, and first wife Karen Best Groves. Yet, he built new relationships that brought him happiness and fulfillment.

Surviving Claude is his loving wife, Janet Long Miller, alongside her stepchildren Tonya and Andrew. Claude also leaves behind cherished grandchildren — Emma Marsh, Brendan Parravano, Rosalie Miller, Blaise Miller — and great-granddaughter Reagan Marsh. His great-niece, Sarah Morley, and numerous other family members shared in his vibrant life.

Music played a pivotal role in Claude’s identity. He actively participated in the church choir and delighted in the sounds of his piano playing. Claude’s love for music extended to attending concerts, often traveling to see his granddaughter Emma perform in Spain and Morocco, and rooting for his grandson Brendan in countless shows.

They met at Trinity Lutheran Church in Evanston, where their bond flourished through shared interests, including a mutual adoration for *The Phantom of the Opera*. Their romance led to a proposal in Casablanca, culminating in a marriage among blooming gardens. Even as their paths diverged, they found solace in companionship, enjoying simple pleasures like watching basketball and grilling in the backyard.

Jan became Claude’s unwavering support during his final months, nurturing him with incredible compassion. Claude often reflected on Jan’s dedication, remarking on the profound impact she had on his life. It is this kind of unwavering love that marks the fabric of a meaningful existence.

In honoring Claude’s life, his family extends sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff at Tabor Hills Bohemian Home, along with the team at Residential Hospice, particularly Nurse Rosa Llanas. Their dedication ensured that Claude received the care and comfort he deserved during his transition.

A memorial visitation to celebrate Claude’s life will take place on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, located at 44 S. Mill St, Naperville, IL 60540. The memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, situated at 1313 N. Mill St, Naperville, IL 60563. This occasion will include military honors and a luncheon to follow. Claude’s final resting place will be Ramoth Baptist Church Cemetery in Stafford, Virginia.
